There’s something about sangria that screams “summer!”. (And no, we’re not just saying that because it’s alliterative.) Almost everyone has a different opinion on what constitutes the best, or original, sangria, with sangria recipes ranging from those passed down word-for-word through generations to more of a “throw whatever fruits and wine you have on hand into a jug and stir” school of thought. Either way, the results are refreshing, so we’ve put together seven recipes for our (current) favourite sangria recipes for summer fun.<!-more>

1. Classic Sangria

At its most basic and traditional, Spanish Sangria is a mix of red wine (originally Rioja), fruit, seltzer or fruit juice, and brandy. Follow this basic formula for a sangria that will taste just like you remember… but better.

  • 1 bottle of dry or fruity red wine (such as Rioja, Sangiovese, Beaujolais, Shiraz, or Rose), chilled
  • ¼ cup brandy
  • ¼ cup Triple Sec, Cognac, or other orange liqueur
  • ¼ cup fresh orange juice
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • 1 apple, cored and chopped
  • 2 cups club soda or seltzer
  • ice, to serve

In a large pitcher, stir together wine, brandy, orange liqueur, orange juice, and sugar until the sugar dissolves. Add all fruits, then cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours but preferably 8 hours or overnight. Before serving, add the club soda and pour into ice-filled glasses.

2. Hippie Sangria

There are two elements that make this sangria a “hippie sangria”. First, it replaces the plain club soda and sugar with kombucha, and second, you have to drink it barefoot. Okay, okay, we’re joking about the second part…

To make Hippie Sangria, follow the above recipe but leave out the sugar and replace the club soda with 2 cups of your favourite kombucha (store-bought or homemade). To continue with the hippie vibe, keep the orange but check out your local farmers market for in-season fruits to replace the lemon and apple. Apricots and raspberries, perhaps? Plums and white nectarines? Go for it!

3. Non-Alcoholic Sangria

Designated drivers, pregnant women, and those under 21 shouldn’t have to miss out on the deliciousness that is sangria. Rather than simply adding additional flavoured soda and juice instead of wine to the classic mix, make your non-alcoholic sangria special with the following recipe.

  • 3 cups cranberry or pomegranate juice
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 2 cups ginger ale
  • ¼ ½ cup sugar, to taste (depending on tartness of the cranberry or pomegranate juice)
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • 1 pear, chopped
  • 1 cup berries
  • ice, to serve

Combine all in a large pitcher and serve over ice.

4. White Wine Sangria

The classic Spanish sangria may take strong red wine as its base, but white wine sangria can be just as — perhaps even more — refreshing on a hot summer day. And while we’re changing things up, let’s play around with the other base flavours and fruits, too!

  • 1 bottle of crisp white wine (such as Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, or Pinot Grigio)
  • ½ cup brandy
  • ¼ cup peach nectar
  • ¼ cup sugar, to taste
  • 2 limes, sliced
  • 2 fresh peaches, peeled, pitted, and chopped
  • 1 cup green grapes, halved
  • few sprigs of mint
  • 2 cups citrus soda/spritzer
  • ice, to serve

In a large pitcher, combine wine, brandy, nectar, and sugar, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Add the lime, peaches, grapes, and mint, then cover and refrigerate for at least one hour. Before serving, add the citrus soda and pour into ice-filled glasses.

5. Cider Sangria

“But wait! What if I don’t like wine?! Will I never get to drink sangria?” Never fear, gentle reader, we hear you. If you’re vehemently anti-wine, you may never enjoy the truly classic sangria, but can we tempt you with sangria made from cider? This one even uses apple ice wine!

  • 1 cup apple ice wine
  • 1 cup apple juice
  • ½ cup whiskey or vodka
  • 2 apples, thinly sliced
  • 1 orange, thinly sliced
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1-inch piece ginger, peeled and sliced
  • 750ml hard apple cider
  • ice, to serve

In a large pitcher, combine ice wine, apple juice, whiskey, apples, orange, cinnamon, and ginger, stirring well to combine. Refrigerate for at least two hours. Just before serving, add cider and serve over ice.

6. Sangria Granita

Have you ever sipped a glass of sangria and suddenly thought “why, I wish I could eat this with a spoon!” This simple recipe for sangria granita is here to make that wish come true. The best part? It doesn’t even require an ice cream maker.

  • 1 bottle red wine (such as chianti or cabernet sauvignon)
  • 1 orange, juiced
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • ¼ cup Cointreau
  • ¾ cup sugar

Combine all ingredients and stir to dissolve sugar. Pour into a 9×13-inch metal baking dish and freeze for 3-4 hours, stirring with a fork every half hour to create a chunky granita texture. Make sure to scrape the sides into the centre as you go, as the outer edges freeze more quickly. Scrape with a fork once more before serving.

7. Sangria Fruit Salad

Let’s be real; while a glass of sangria is all well and good, for some of us the real treat is the alcohol-steeped fruit at the bottom of the pitcher. If you’d like to cut out the pesky liquid middleman, give this sangria fruit salad a shot for your next cottage picnic.

  • 1 cup full-bodied red wine
  • ¼ cup brandy or cognac
  • ½ cup fresh orange juice
  • zest of 1 lemon and 1 lime
  • 2 tablespoons sugar or honey
  • 1 orange, peeled and roughly chopped
  • 2 cups strawberries, halved
  • 1 cup blueberries or raspberries
  • 2 cup chopped watermelon
  • 1 apple, chopped
  • whipped cream and mint, optional, to serve

Stir together the wine, brandy, juice, zest and sugar or honey until sweetener is dissolved. Gently mix through all of the fruit, then cover and refrigerate for 2 hours. Serve in individual glasses or bowls, garnished with mint and whipped cream.
